On Trend: Velvet

What’s that I hear blowing in the Autumn wind?…

“It’s all about velvet dahling…”

Before we get started I must welcome you to the first episode of this new series ‘On Trend’, where I will be bringing you right up to speed on all the latest trends in fashion. Fashion is constantly changing with endless outfit combinations, allowing you to let your imagination and creativity run as wild or as tame as you want it to be. Each week I’ll introduce you to a new trend and how simple additions to your wardrobe can keep you bang on trend without having to break the bank!

Right, let’s get this show on the road!

Velvet is just one of the huge trends of A/W 16 and I could not be more delighted about it! We saw it creeping in a little bit last season with some velvet accessories, in particular ankle boots, but this season has seen it explode onto the market. A/W 16 catwalks saw velvet in pretty much every collection, from 3.1 Phillip Lim to Gucci to Givenchy to Balmain to Stella McCartney to Prada to Preen to Roland Mouret; okay I think you get it, it was EVERYWHERE.

Are you really a designer if you don’t have velvet in your A/W16 collection though?

So how do you do this trend without looking like a former 70s rockstar who still hasn’t accepted the fact that “it’s over mate”?

My advice, stick to just once piece of velvet in your outfit. This could simply be velvet ankle boots to jazz up the classic go-to of jeans and a ‘nice top’, or go the whole hog with a velvet jumpsuit!

I’ve made it a little easier for you and picked out a few pieces that will bring your wardrobe right up to speed, while also keeping your purse happy!
